Secularism basic, unamendable part of Constitution, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court expressed reservations about a plea to remove ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Preamble, deeming them integral to the Constitution. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar said that the concepts of “secularism” and “socialism” that have evolved over the years in the country are unique, very much Indian and different from western models.
