Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A Robinson received the Nobel Prize in Economics for studying how institutions shape prosperity. The Indian laureates include Amartya Sen for his work on welfare economics and Abhijit Banerjee for his experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. The prize, awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, has honored 93 laureates since 1969.
