The IPL Governing Council has reintroduced the ‘uncapped player’ rule, allowing Chennai Super Kings to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, played his last international match in 2019. Dhoni had also stepped down from captaincy before IPL 2024 began, handing it over to batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad.
