Omar Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, drew parallels between the 1999 IC814 hijacking and the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Syed. He explained how releasing terrorists for Rubaiya set a precedent for future negotiations. Abdullah also clarified that the J&K government had no role in Afzal Guru’s execution.
