The Centre responded to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s letter on rising rape cases, stating that 123 fast-track courts allocated to West Bengal were not functional. As of June 2024, only 6 POCSO courts were operational. Union Minister Annuparna Devi emphasized the need for stringent legislation and fast-track courts for speedy trials to ensure women’s safety.
