The Assam cabinet approved a proposed law mandating the registration of Muslim marriages and divorces with the government, eliminating the role of ‘qazis’. The Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriage and Divorce Bill, 2024 will be tabled in the legislative assembly. Child marriages will be deemed illegal. District commissioners will take custody of current records held by qazis.
