Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPO), under Herbert Kickl’s leadership, has won the general election with 29.1% of the vote. The FPO outpaced Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s Austrian People’s Party (OVP). The party’s focus on immigration and economic issues tapped into public frustration over inflation, the Ukraine war, and migration concerns. Kickl needs a coalition partner to govern.
