The Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days starting 18 August, banning rallies and assemblies. This action came amid protests over the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, which has led to nationwide strikes by the medical fraternity.
